Keith E. McEwen, M.D., is a native of Chicago, Illinois. He received his Bachelors degree in both Zoology and Psychology with distinction from Iowa State University. He obtained his Medical Doctorate from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. His general surgery residency was completed at Indiana University Medical School. Dr. McEwen is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a member of the American Medical Association, Indiana State Medical Association and the Indianapolis Medical Society. Dr. McEwen has performed more than 6,500 successful laparoscopic procedures as of July 2007.

Dr. McEwen has been performing outpatient LAP-BAND® System Surgeries since June 2005. He is the only surgeon in Indiana to have performed the LAP-BAND® System Surgery on an outpatient basis. Dr. McEwen is credentialed with the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons.

Dr. McEwen decided in his adolescence that medicine was the profession of his choice. As he progressed through his education, surgery became his passion. During residency, Laparoscopy had been introduced as a new and promising change in surgical technique. Therefore, he decided that he would strive to excel at Laparoscopic procedures to provide patients with a surgical option that would allow them shorter recovery times.

Dr. McEwen has a special interest in caring for patients with hepatobiliary conditions and chronic abdominal pain. He has taken extensive training courses in micro-laparoscopy and advanced laparoscopy technique. His practice has been dedicated to continual education to provide the most optimal results for patients during the surgical experience.

His interest in Bariatric Medicine began several years ago from listening to his patients who confided their daily struggles with excessive weight and failed diet attempts. During 15 years of private practice, he continued to see an upward trend of obese patients. With his practice having a commitment of 98% procedures being performed with Advanced Laparoscopy, he patiently awaited the FDA approval of the LAP-BAND system. Once it was approved, Dr. McEwen knew he would be able to dedicate his time to this procedure. With the LAP-BAND ® technology, Dr. McEwen can help patients achieve their weight loss goals and obtain a healthy lifestyle with less invasive surgical weight loss options.

When he is not practicing medicine, Dr. McEwen enjoys spending time with his two daughters. He has been involved in coaching youth basketball with his children. He enjoys traveling and participating in triathlons each summer. He is an instrument rated pilot and has a passion for flying.
